[mythtv-users] Need new Capture card...

I'm using the Hauppauge HVR-1600 which supports both NTSC (analog SD) and ATSC/QAM (digital HD & SD). I did need to compile the latest driver (cx18) to fix a problem with noise on some analog stations. The analog side of the HVR-1600 is very much like the PVR-150 in that it includes MPEG2 hardware encoding. This card has separate coax inputs for analog & digital, so you'll need an appropriate splitter.

I also have a pcHDTV HD-5500 which also supports both analog & digital. I believe the HD-3000 is digital only. The HD-5500 only has one coax input, so cabling is easier. However, the analog half doesn't do MPEG2 hardware encoding. Instead, compression has to be done in software, which means .nuv files containing either RTjpeg or MPEG4 encoded video (your choice).

FWIW, I prefer the features/functionality of the HVR-1600 over the HD-5500, plus the HVR-1600 cost less.

HTH,
Helen
