Sometimes the simplest things are best. Try one of those wall-wart
timers which you stick between the wall socket and the device.
Programme it to turn off at 3.15 and on at 3.30, or something like
that. This is an example of what I mean:

(this assumes you don't have to hit an 'on' switch on the HDPVR  after
it is powered on at the mains).
