Thanks for the responses.  In other words, it is as I suspected, no good
way.

I have not upgraded my existing install because I wanted that to be a
fall-back in case I didn't like 9.10/0.22   So I don't have an upgraded
former-0.21 database to backup.  (I have two separate partitions for
8.04 and 9.10).

And so far that is the case.  I get poor display with shivering text in
the ISD and other fine lines.  Looking through this list I see that I
should have selected slim rather than the CPU+ that came default.  I
will try that next.  However, in regards to that, the real question si
why VDPAU doesn't work for me (get blank screen) on my GS8300.  That was
one of the reasons I wanted to upgrade.

But that's off topic for my original topic.
