I have never uses the RCA inputs.  Been S/PDIF from day one.

I really have no idea how to debug the issues described on this
thread, because I generally don't have the problem.  I have two units
(C2 and E1), and they do glitch occasionally, but for me the frequency
is about once every 2-3 months.

I almost wonder if the problem is STB specific?  Maybe some STBs (or
service providers) produce a cleaner video and AC3 signal than others?
 Personally, I feed my HD-PVRs with a Directv H20-100 and H21-200.
