I think I found a solution on some of the mailing lists. I added the 
following to my xorg.conf on my IONITX running VDPAU:

Section "Extensions"
    Option         "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

So far, it has been 2 full days without any 
corruption/tearing/glitching, whatever it was.
