AR (Acoustic Research) had some 4-speaker headphones back in the very early 
70s, when "Quad" was the latest craze. I tried them out, and you could 
definitely get an impression of "front" and "rear". They resembled the old 
Koss Pro-4AA units, heavy and clumsy, but they made good sound.
