I agree with your point about them being switched off a lot of the 
time, but I can think a fair number of them are going to go into 
"always on" applications.

Cheaply built - yes. But so are most PSUs :-/ For this sort of 
application they won't be linear, even small ones these days are 
mostly switch-mode, apart from anything else, I suspect switch mode 
are cheaper to build as they use less copper and iron !


But my main objection stands - external power supplies are just "yet 
another" box and cable to try and keep control of.
