Yes...there's a setting, something like 'always stream recordings from
backend' that will do what you want.  Sorry, I can't remember the precise
name, but it's there.

I've had that problem before.  I think it's due to the interrupt rate from
the ethernet card getting high enough to saturate the CPU.  Some ethernet
cards are more processor intensive than others, too; low-end ones rely a
lot more on the CPU to do the heavy lifting.

It's pretty typical.  I think the streaming protocol does more buffering
and is generally designed more with video playback in mind.
