That sounds like the problems I had with my setup.

I could have a good recording then a totaly messed up recording.
I experimented with different antennas and amplifiers with no success.
I had 70-80% signal strength.

Finally I found an option that helped.

   options dib3000mc buggy_sfn_workaround=1

It's available in newer kernels, I'm running 2.6.26.

After I added this option I've had no problems at all.
