I am running Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid. Last night I wiped my OS partition
and did a clean install with Ubuntu 8.10. Then I updated mythtv
Jean-Yves VDPAU capable .21-fixes repository. I did a complete restore
of my mythtv database. I watched about 30-45 minutes of live tv
without any artifacts or problems. The I set up a recording in mythweb
so that it would record the show I was currently watching. As soon as
I hit "update recording settings" (ie it switch from being live tv to
being a recording), the image jumped and then the artifacts started. I
don't really know how mythtv interacts with the ivtv drivers, but it
seems that I have some setting in mythtv that changes the
configuration for the ivtv driver. Next I stopped the recording and
took a look with 'mplayer /dev/video0' and there were artifacts there
too.

So I wiped the partition one more time, did a clean install, and only
used the mythtv from the Ubuntu repositories. I also didn't do a full
database restore, I did a partial restore using the new backup/restore
scripts. So only my recordings were restored and none of my settings.
I made a few hours of recordings last night and everything was fine.
So next I updated to the mythbuntu weekly builds. I made a couple more
recordings and I haven't seen problems yet. So at this point I know it
was either some mythtv setting that was in my database, or it was
running the VDPAU patched version of .21-fixes. If things go well
today, I will update to the VDPAU version tonight and see what
happens. If everything is still good then I at least know it was some
mythtv setting from the database, but I am not going to go back and
try to figure out exactly what it was.
