If you are going to install from source, do not download the tarball,
it is obscenely out of date.  Instead, use subversion to check out the
fixes branch:

svn co http://svn.mythtv.org/svn/branches/release-0-21-fixes/

Otherwise, you will be missing hundreds of essential fixes.  In answer
to your question, lame 3.98 is fine.
