I have a 40 GB drive that spun 24 hours a day for 5 years and still continues to work.  The only drives that have died on me had severe flaws to begin with (i.e. the IBM "Deathstar", the Quantum "Bigfoot", and a drive with a broken molex connector whose electronics eventually fried).

We have a few 8+ year old ide drives here at work still spinning 24/7.
The biggest reason for hard drives to hit the end of their life is
that we replaced the machine. I have at least 30 of these drives in my
desk that were running when we pulled them.
