I have no idea if this 
'/GetPlaybackURL/UNABLE/TO/FIND/LOCAL/FILE/ON/mythbox/' is normal for a 
missing file.  Was there anything in the logs to explain why mythbackend 
was no longer running?

It is really not advised to rename the actual recordings.  You can use 
'cp -L' to follow links, rather than copying them.  On Windows machines 
over samba, links will automatically be followed on the server side, and 
there's nothing special you have to do.  If you're using X, it's up to 
your file manager whether it has an option to follow the links.
