Those are mainly for configuring the device to RECEIVE IR input from a
variety of different remote controls.  If you want to control cable boxes,
you can take a look at remotes.tar.bz2 linked from the main
http://www.lirc.org home page (also available here individually :
http://lirc.sourceforge.net/remotes/.  If you concatenate the appropriate
entries together to create your /etc/lircd.conf file, you will then be able
control the appropriate cable box via irsend commands.  You can control
which transmitter gets used by using "irsend set_transmitters N" where N is
the transmitter number. These commands just all need to be put in an
appropriate script that gets configured inside a MythTV called external
channel change script, and you are all set.
