When deemed necessary by the developer(s). Essentially only bugfixes
are backported to the current -fixes branch with new features staying
in trunk. One notable exception was the backporting of Schedules
Direct support when it was launched to mitigate having to make a new
release of MythTV.

Before a new release there is a feature freeze to iron out bugs before
a new stable release is made. The aim immediately prior to release is
for trunk to be as stable as possible. Once the release is made,
development starts up again on trunk (with the possibility to become
very unstable again) and the backporting cycle starts again to the
current stable release's -fixes branch.
