This is the first thing that you need to fix, at least if your driver 
is hda_intel. The 1.0.18a driver is broken. The current (working) 
driver is 1.0.20. I understand that there are RPMs available for this, 
but its no problem to d/l and install the source from http://www.alsa-
project.org
