Your steps look find and are similar to what I did. What does dmesg  
say after you load the driver?

When I lspic I get:

lspci | grep CX
05:02.0 Multimedia video controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video  
and Audio Decoder (rev 05)
05:02.1 Multimedia controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and  
Audio Decoder [Audio Port] (rev 05)
05:02.2 Multimedia controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and  
Audio Decoder [MPEG Port] (rev 05)
05:02.4 Multimedia controller: Conexant CX23880/1/2/3 PCI Video and  
Audio Decoder [IR Port] (rev 05)

but I don't know if that's significant. Anyway I'd start with any  
errors the driver may be logging. This should do the trick:

dmesg | grep cx18
