My (very limited) experience suggests that a lot of them are designed 
with a 1U rack mounting case in mind - so they are a tad under 1 3/4" 
including standoffs and base plate etc. The last one I used (for a 
small Asterisk PBX) had a cutout in the case top to clear one of the 
connector towers which sat level with the top of the cover.
