Just thought I'd post an update for any potential readers of the
future; owing to a sequence of events too Clouseau-esque to be admited
- I tried again tonight with the 32-bit version of 9.04 (my OP failed
to specify that my attempt was with the 64-bit version), and have for
the last half-hour or so, experienced no network issues.

It's possible the problems were localized to the 64-bit version.
