This is correct but confusing to the user. Users don't care (and often don't
know) what S/PDIF carries, they only care about what is output by their
systems and AC3 and DTS are 5.1 (or higher) as far as they are concerned. I
suspect a lot of users assume that the option causes downmixing of AC3/DTS
to stereo. It would be helpful if the option stated that it was intended for
analogue surround output only.

Why does that option interfere with passthrough? From a users point of view
I don't understand why setting it to 5.1 disables passthrough.
