I know this has been answered, but I just wanted to clarify this point.

If you use the stock unmodified mythtv .21 you can still use vdpau for
playing back videos using an external player in mythVideo.  Since
mplayer supports vdpau, and you can configure any video in mythvideo
to play through mplayer, that's one path to playing a blu-ray rip with
vdpau.

On the other hand, it isn't strictly necessary.
