Hi Jan,

Again, thanks so much for your help.

I couldn't tell you. My box started life as an 7.10 box and has been
upgraded three times using the provided upgrade mechanism through 8.04, 8.10
and now 9.04. I would assume that's as out of the box as one can get short
of a fresh install.

I haven't changed anything explicitly and don't tell modprobe to do anything
in any explicit way. It is what it is after the upgrade manager gets done
with it and it has always worked until now.

An excellent clue!

OK, here is the result of modprobe -l | grep lirc

kernel/ubuntu/lirc/lirc_imon/lirc_imon.ko
kernel/ubuntu/lirc/lirc_serial_igor/lirc_serial_igor.ko
kernel/ubuntu/lirc/lirc_gpio/lirc_gpio.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_sasem.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_sir.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_i2c.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_mceusb2.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_bt829.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_atiusb.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_serial.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_ttusbir.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_cmdir.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_pvr150.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_igorplugusb.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_it87.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_ite8709.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_streamzap.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_dev.ko
updates/dkms/lirc_mceusb.ko

The result of lsmod | grep lirc is null. No response at all to that.

I see nothing relevant in dmesg but here
is the result of dmesg | grep module:

[ 1.578275] brd: module loaded
[ 1.578559] loop: module loaded
[ 19.172128] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.

Thanks,

Scott
