Yes, I believe you need a Windows machine to update the firmware.  
Luckily my son has one I could use.

I have the latest firmware and I'm not sure how to get an earlier  
version to see if it would fix the problem so I don't know if  
upgrading will help you much.

Now that I have switched over to 720p all the time I am getting many  
more successful recordings that the frontend will play back (still  
some failures), but TONS of errors in my logs. Along with the ones  
reported earlier in this thread (Stop(): Not running. / MPEGRec(/dev/ 
video3) Error: Device error detected), I'm now getting:

2009-07-07 08:06:11.731 [libfaad @ 0xb6f82e10]faac: frame decoding  
failed: Invalid number of channels
2009-07-07 08:06:11.832 [libfaad @ 0xb6f82e10]faac: frame decoding  
failed: Bitstream value not allowed by specification

By "TONS" I mean enough to fill my hard drive if I don't clear my log  
files every couple of days (13GB of these errors since yesterday).
