FWIW, the research I did suggests that the serial port can theoretically be used
soon after powering up to control the box to run factory tests - but once the
EPG software starts the port simply prints status updates; no control possible.

However as I'm only interested in the status reports as a feedback mechanism
then that's fine and most satellite boxes will work with this.
