Keep in mind that even if the projector is bright enough to be visible 
with ambient light, even small amounts of light will wash out the black 
areas of the picture and ruin the contrast.  Depending on your tolerance 
for that sort of thing you may or may not find the results watchable.  
You may want to invest in some good blackout curtains for daytime viewing.

A white wall will work as a projection surface as long as the paint is 
matte.  If it's gloss or semi-gloss you'll get a bright glare spot. If 
you have a local university that has a surplus store you might be able 
to get a used projection screen pretty cheaply; I got a roll-up one in 
like-new condition that way.  A good screen will give you more 
brightness and contrast than a painted wall.
