Not sure where you went wrong, but this has come up before and would
be handled in the archives.

HOWEVER this is not a situation myth was designed for. There is no
schedule, no channels etc.

Why not try:

cat /dev/video0 > myvhstape.mpg
push play on VCR
ctrl-c to finish.
