Gregg,

This has a been a popular topic over on the MiniMyth site for awhile. 
The moderator of the site, author of the MiniMyth package, and 
all-around helpful guy has written scripts to accomplish what you seek.

Check out www.minimyth.org and look thru the scripts "mm_sleep" and/or 
"mm_suspend." are probably what you need.
