I think that the answers given don't address what the issue is here.
I am not at home, so I can't try the given line out, but I will tell
you my problem with audio over HDMI. I can get regular audio to work
using hw:0,3 or any number of variations on that. I cannot, however,
get S/PDIF passthrough to work over HDMI, only over my standard
optical out. I always just get clicking noises. It is passing the
digital as an analog signal. I think the key in the line JP used is
"alsa:device=iec958=1". In alsamixer, I have "iec958", "iec958
default", and "iec958 1" all listed but I have never found how to tell
anything to use "iec958 1" as the device. I will try it out tonight
and see if it will give my proper passthrough or not, but I think that
this may be the problem. So, the question then would be, is there any
way to address "iec958 1" as the passthrough device, a la
"ALSA:iec958(AES0 0x02)"?
Joel

P.S. JP, what mobo are you using?
