I just wanted to follow up on this as I am still not able to have certain
video fill the entire screen using mplayer even thought they have a 16:9
aspect ration.

I was able to change the resolution to 1080i (1920x1080) and still no dice.
Since this only occurs on certain videos, I guess I'll just live with it.
For reference, the latest mplayer command I am using is:

mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -ao alsa:device=iec958 -ac hwdts,hwac3, -aspect
16:9
