You do not need VDPAU to get HD playback working.  If you've got a
halfway decent CPU, it's unnecessary.  I can play back 1080p BluRay
rips without it using a 3.0 GHz Core2 Duo.

And I don't consider a 30 second skip button to be any replacement for
commercial detection and the "skip to the end of the commercial block"
button on the MythTV.

And time stretch is a godsend.  I don't have loads of free time, so it
often means the difference of being able to watch something at 120% or
140% speed vs. not watching it at all.

I just don't think I could be happy going to a box that just does the
basics, even if it was free.
