I don't understand why the model for the device you all are talking
about isn't something very close to the Roku NetFlix player:

1) Linux based - and they've released the Open Source part - just not
the NetFlix DRM part

2) Linux in a flash drive - no internal storage, quiet, low power,
runs off a wall wart

3) USB or network storage for recordings

4) Already proven that it can do at least 720p

5) Costs $99

6) Use an HDHR or something external for DRM-free digital recording

7) Link up with some STB chip maker or a cable company to eventually
be able to record whatever the user has paid his cable company for
