Here are my findings regarding VDPAU and nvidia card, I posted this on
the nvidia forums:
So far my findings with nvidia cards (that I own) are as followed:

8400gs, 512MB:
pro: does VC-1 decoding with VDPAU, cheap
con: can't handle most deinterlacing option with HD content, no HDMI

9400GT, 512MB:
pro: cheap, does most de-interlacer fine.
con: no VC-1, doesn't do Temporal 2X or Advanced 2X on HD content, no HDMI

8600GT, 256MB:
pro: does all deinterlacer on any content
con: no VC-1, no HDMI

8600GT, 512MB:
pro: does all deinterlacer on any content
con: no VC-1, no HDMI

All those cards are fanless (either gigabyte or Asus make those cards
fanless)..

When I write no HDMI, I mean no native HDMI able to output all the
audio codecs , the nvidia cards only take the sound from the internal
SPDIF connector, so you're limited to 5.1..

There are also 8500GT fanless... haven't tried those, must be similar
in performance to the 9400GT

So right now, I still think the best choice is a 8600GT fanless
assuming you have enough processing power to...

All the other cards have fan, MSI have some that they claimed is
silent even with a fan, and they support HDMI with sound
pass-through..

The other possibilities that seem to do everything is a Gigabyte card
with an nvidia 9400 IGP:

I've ordered one, will report when I get it on how gutsy the GPU really is...
