The first question is pretty well up to you, I personally think they are worth 
the cost.

Some installations have a single UPS, and rely on the network to notify the 
other machines to shut down, at least that's the way I am set up.


Obviously this means that anything necessary to keeping the network working 
should be powered by the UPS.
