Yes, it does work, but only if your CD drive supports it, which
apparently excludes a lot of newer SATA drives, as I understand it.

There is no option to play by ripping, though I expect that you can find
external programs to do that, and you can enable one with a hack in one
of several plugins like MythVideo by creating a dummy file with a
special extension that goes uses the external player.  I don't have any
suggestions for such a player, as I haven't looked into that option yet.
