Searching for Seagate, on the other hand, shows a number of firmware issues, but none of them very recent, which would suggest that the issues have been ironed out. I couldn't find much about problems with Samsung >drives, suggesting that they're probably OK.

Good point, and I take it onboard, as I admit that I ordered the disk before posting to the list :-( OR googling.

 The GP will be fine as a media disk, but I think I'd be wise to separate out the system filesystems.

 As there's very little space in the box, I'll have to go for a 2.5" drive for this. Any recommendations?

Should be quiet (of course) and robust, but speed and capacity aren't an issue as it only needs to house the OS.
