Uh, pretty sure it does.  A single, dedicated backend can shutdown when 
not in use using mythshutdown ( 
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Mythwelcome#MythShutdown_program ) and will 
wake itself before the next recording.  If you have a combined 
frontend/backend system, the system will never shut down as long as the 
frontend is connected, so for those systems, you also need to run 
MythWelcome ( http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Mythwelcome ), as shutdown is 
allowed if MythWelcome is running but not if mythfrontend is running.

And, in 0.22, the master backend will be able to shut down and wake 
remote backends (where it will wake them for recording but /not/ to 
access their recording files--i.e. if you wanted to watch a recording 
from a remote backend's filesystem, you have to manually wake the 
backend).  So, while 0.21-fixes isn't as featureful as 0.22 will be, I 
don't think that "other OS with MCE" even supports having multiple 
"backends," so Myth would be as featureful as it is.
