Also, in the UK, BBC, ITV, and Channel4 had Project Kangaroo, an
attempt to create standards for TV/on demand over IP so that set top
boxes etc could work to a standard rather than a different 'standard'
for every broadcaster. However, Sky objected (pot kettle, black) on
the basis that they didn't want to compete with standards (they
worded it differently) and our competition watchdog stopped it.
For those that don't know, Sky is (more or less) the sole provider of
Pay TV in the UK outside of cabled areas. They behave accordingly -
you can only use their (crippled) receivers, proprietary encryption,
not CAMs etc.
