The geek toy factor ?

Flexibility probably. Someone demo'd it at the local LUG, and from
that moment I knew it had to be my next PVR.

At the moment I'm using EyeTV, great product but has it's
limitations, not least no multirec* and manual scheduling**

A few years ago I bought my parents a Panasonic TU-CTH100 PVR, a
classic example of how not to do it - nice idea, late (underestimated
development time), bug ridden (underestimated development time), just
one software upgrade and then totally abandoned by the manufacturer
(will think twice before ever buying Panny again), and GPL violation
just for good measure***. It does generally work quite well, and it's
a reasonable example of what can be done with 2 tuners.

* It can actually do it, but only manually - you can't schedule
overlapping recordings.

** Requires external listings provider (tvtv in the UK) unless you
want to make do with EPG - but on an SD screen that's rather hard
work. And tvtv is chargeable after the first year that comes with the
EyeTV purchase.

*** It uses GNU/Linux (I pulled the disk out to have a peek), but of
course it's not mentioned anywhere in the documentation.

At the moment I'm still use EyeTV as the old laptop that's running on
can't manage to run a Myth frontend. I've got a PC to use, just need
to sort out the config for X to drive the SCART output. So for now,
Myth is my backup system and I have to watch programs on my laptop.
