I figured it out.  I had the antenna cross-polarized.  I keep forgetting 
that TV stations usually broadcast with horizontal polarization.  I 
swiveled the rabbit ear elements down until they were flat and the PBS 
station popped up on screen.  It's weak, but this suggests a horizontal 
dipole up high on the wall might give good results.

This may all turn out to be moot, because I'll most likely keep getting 
cable, but it's good to know I could get at least *some* TV I'm 
interested in watching if I decided to cancel.  And of course it's 
interesting to play with.
