First thing to check:

I recall the default resolution for the PVR cards was very low. Make sure you 
have set to 720x480 (or the equivalent PAL resolution) at a reasonable 
bitrate. You should wind up with 2.2 GB. per hour or so.

Not *quite* DVD quality, but close.
