I would uninstall any nvidia packages you've ever installed.
then run the nvidia script with --uninstall option.

Then manually delete any nvidia files that could be left.

find /lib/modules/`uname -r` -name "nvidia*" -exec rm -f {} \;

Reboot , then run the installer again
