[mythtv-users] LIRC works during playback but not in the UI

Has anyone seen this before?  I'm running 0.21-19961 and it was working a
few weeks ago just fine.  I did upgrade lirc from 0.8.3 to 0.8.4 and udev to
124 (can't remember what it was at before).  But I went back to lirc 0.8.3
and still does the same thing, remote only works during playback and not in
the UI menus.
I tested with irw and it only shows input during playback too, nothing in UI
menu.

I'm also seeing this line appear a lot in /var/log/message

I'm using a homebrewed IR with lirc_serial.  Has been working great for a
year now, this just started.

Any ideas?  Thanks for any help.
