Hi. I inherited a Dazzle DM-5000 some time ago and am only now
experimenting with getting it working under my MythTV distro, Mythbuntu.
I've had limited success so far and want to see if I can progress further
with input from this list. I should mention at the outset that this device
was given to me by someone who tried unsuccessfully to get it working
under Windows--whether through lack of competence or because of some
defect in the device, I cannot say. In other words, I cannot say that this
is a known-working device. The light comes on when I plug it into USB, but
I cannot say from my own experience or from the testimony of others that
it actually has performed its designated function at some point.
Research on the internet indicates this device is supported under Linux.
http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/video4linux/CARDLIST.usbvision has
it listed as follows:
47 -> Global Village GV-007 (NTSC) [07d0:0002]
In any case, when I plug the device into the computer, dmesg output
indicates that it is recognized and that a driver for it is loaded.
Relevant dmesg output follows:
[ 11.243038] usbvision_probe: Global Village GV-007 (NTSC) found

So far so good. I made up a udev rule for it so that the device would be
symlinked to /dev/DAZZLE. That seems to have worked. The problem comes
when I try to set it up as a capture card, then as an input connection. I
can select it as a capture card (though I do need to enter manually the
device symlink I created), but the system does pause for inordinate
amounts of time during that process as if detection is hanging or
something of that nature. Pretty much the same sort of hanging occurs when
I go to set up an input connection on the composite video of this capture
card (I'm actually hoping to run an old VCR through it, and I've set up an
unused channel for that). But once I've gone through those steps and tried
to scan for channels, I get the message "failed to open the card," which
looks like a bit of a show-stopper. Then, when I back out of setup and try
to view live TV I can no longer do so: I get a blank screen before being
dropped back to the MythTV main menu. Once I disassociate the card's
composite connection from any source, live TV starts working again.
So, I'm looking for any pointers anyone might provide on diagnosing the
problem. I'm wondering, to begin with, whether there are any commands I
can issue from a terminal that will help me determine if this card even
works--like maybe hooking my VCR to it, playing a tape, then issuing cat
/dev/DAZZLE >test.mpg? Any other sort of command-line manipulation or
probing I might do to determine the state of this device? Of course I may
also have committed errors in set-up or configuration that others may be
able to point out. In any case, relevant input will be appreciated.
Thanks,
James
