You'll need to install smartmontools. I found guide below helpful and
along with 'man smartctl' was able to run some tests on my hard
drives. Sorry away from my computer so can't be more specific right
now. The article didn't give the command to run short and long tests
but it gives all the background that's not in the manual. Run
'smartctl -l selftest /dev/###' to get  the results of those tests
when they have run.
