Ah!  So even after following a mythtv install howto (w/instructions on 
adding fonts) I was still missing some.  Fortunately, I log the output 
of my mythfrontend program and checking I found:

> 2009-04-18 23:28:39.207 Unable to find font: FreeMono.ttf
>                         No OSD will be displayed.

I googled that to where it was suggested to try:

> apt-get install ttf-freefont

And that worked.
