nVidia's on-chip TMDS transmitter was only capable of 150MHz in
the 5xxx & 6xxx era, so you needed to buy an expensive card with
an external TMDS transmitter if you wanted to use a single link
DVI cable and drive a 1600x1200 monitor at 60Hz with normal
blanking, or at 1920x1200 with reduced blanking. It no doubt
has been impossible to buy one of the professional grade 5xxx
and 6xxx cards that went beyond the nVidia reference design for
quite some time.
