[mythtv-users] Disk Arrangement and LVM + JFS

After some great help in another thread, I've decided to give CentOS 5.3 +
JFS a try for my new system which is my main server and of course,
mythbackend. My question is how would you guys recommend setting up the
RAIDs? I have 4 SATA 500GB, 1 PATA 500GB, and 4 SATA 1.5TB drives. I'm
debating the following options, with the requirements of:
a) A fast root partition, capable of running VMWare images with as little
IO overhead as possible. (Root) IO overhead is actually one of the main
issues with my current setup, but that's partially because I have a bunch
of 100GB RAID partitions across drives of different sizes.
b) A place to store recordings/videos
c) A place to store files and our creative work
Option 1: RAID0 system drives, RAID5 storage, No LVM
4 SATA 1.5TB drives in RAID 5 for 4.5TB of usable space for Videos (jfs)
4 SATA 500GB drives partitioned into 50GB, and 400GB which make up:
2 50GB partitions in RAID0 for the Root (performance) (ext3)
2 50GB partitions in RAID0 to do a nightly rsync of the Root to for
backup (ext3)
4 400GB partitions in RAID5 for 1.2TB of space for Files (jfs)
1 PATA 500GB drive to rsync creative files nightly for backup (jfs)
Option 2: RAID5 only, with LVM (I realize I may have to do some small boot
partition outside the LVM as well since everything is RAID5.)
4 SATA 1.5TB drives in RAID 5 for 4.5TB of usable space in the LVM
4 SATA 500GB drives + 1 PATA 500GB drive in RAID 5 for 2TB of usable space
in the LVM
50GB partition for Root (ext3)
The rest to /storage (split between creative/files/video) (jfs)
The advantage of Option 1 is the highest system performance with the lowest
overhead, while Option 2 provides simplicity. Thoughts?
Also, another question I have: Is there any chance the 500GB PATA drive
will slow down the array of SATA drives?
Thanks,
Ben
