My advice, then, is to get an oscilloscope. That's what I had to do 
when testing a direct PC->Dish receiver interface I was building, so 
I could figure out why it was occasionally unreliable. (I later 
abandoned this approach in favor of a USB_UIRT2, since it generates 
its own carrier in hardware, the same way I assume your device will.)

Using the scope and the info in the LIRC config file, you should be 
able to figure it out the protocol. Heck, you can probably do it even 
without the scope if you read through the LIRC source code enough.
