The important caveat being only the Hauppauge HD PVR can record HD channels
in full HD component. It's still not the exact same stream as you would get
if you managed to get firewire or via OTA ASTC tuner, because the box will
decode the stream and then the HD PVR will reencode it in a slightly
different format. It's still fairly lossless, from what I gather. Firewire
or a tuner connected to an antenna will dump the original stream straight to
disk, unmodified.
Nothing, however, stops you from jacking the set top box into the SVIDEO or
component in on a different capture card, you just end up with a downsampled
signal. It's still a much better picture than analog, but it's not perfect
HD quality.
If you're lucky enough to live in a place with good OTA HD coverage, that's
still, in my opinion, the best option because marries ease capture with a
free signal. No worries about controlling your box with a blaster or having
the signal locked on the box.
