OK. Checked the recording profiles. LiveTV and Default are exactly the same,
as far as I can tell through the Recording Profiles screen. The values for
both are:

Width=720, Height=480
CODEC=MPEG-4
Bitrate=2200
Max Quality=2
Min Quality=15
Max Quality Diff=13
Scale bitrate (checked)
Number of threads=1
CODEC=MP3
Sample Rate=48000
MP3 Quality=7
Volume=90

Now the weird part: if I record and force the LiveTV profile, the recording is
fine. The only assumption I can make is that there is something different
between the two profiles that doesn't show on the Profiles screen.

Any ideas? All suggestions greatfully accepted.
